INTERNATIONAL FINALS YOUTH RODEO 24

Trey Kimzey set the arena record  in the bull riding at the IFYR with 89.5 on Scott Burris’s bull Honeycutt. Trey, younger brother to two-time PRCA World Champion bull rider, Sage, learned how to ride bulls from his dad. “I was excited to draw Honeycutt. He bucked a kid off during the first perf and I knew what I had.” He approached his ride like any other. “You’ve got to try your guts out and and go to him.” Trey grew up in Strong City, Okla., and will be senior this year in Cheyenne. Once he graduates, he plans to attend SWOSU in Weatherford, and will ride bulls for a couple years for the college and follow in his brother’s footsteps. Sage Kimzey, a two-time PRCA World Champion bullrider, is currently riding in Calgary and sitting on top. “I’m really proud of Sage, and hopefully I can follow in his shoes.” The brothers talk everyday about their rides. “I’ll send him a video and he’ll send me one back. We can compare the videos and help each other out.” Along with Sage, Trey has a sister, Dusta, who is a professional trick rider and barrel racer. Trey joins her in the trick riding and roping when he can. “We were actually doing back flips on horses one day and my mom (Jennifer) told me we were going to learn to do it right, so she sent us to Karen Vold’s school.” He keeps sharp on his bull riding by getting on a lot of practice bulls about 30 minutes from home. “I can get on as many bulls as I want.” Riding bulls has become muscle memory. “It’s everything I do in the practice pen and working out,” he said. Trey is on the road a lot, and considers riding his workout. His diet consists of no pop and very little fast food. “I eat a lot of wraps, fruit, and vegetables.”  When it comes to getting ready to ride, Trey does the same thing every time. “I even wear the same pants. It all gets packed up the same way too.” Trey heads from IFYR to Gillette, Wyo., where he will compete for Oklahoma High School Rodeo Association. He’s had a few breaks along the way (leg and collar bone) which kept him from winning. “I’m healthy now and hope to keep it that way.”

Karissa Rayhill made her first trip from Martin, S.D. to tie goats and breakaway rope at the IFYR. It paid off. She won the first round with 7.2 and will take home $1,181 for her run.  The 17-year-old really likes to tie goats. She holds the arena record in Pierre, S.D., and holds the title as the 4-H state finals Goat Tying champion three years in a row. She had to pay her own way to get to Shawnee, from the gas to the entry fees. She took the money from breaking colts to fund the trip and now she can replenish the account.
