GLEN ROSE, Texas – Two short years ago, the Texas Bronc Rider’s Association Finals (TBRA) made history by launching rodeo’s first organization for bucking horse riders only. In 2017, they followed that up with the first organized women’s ranch bronc riding tour and finals. It started like this.
TBRA President Daryl McElroy is dedicated to promoting bronc riding. Just before the 2016 finals, he got the idea to invite the lady ranch bronc riders to compete on a one-time basis. It started with contacting Montana’s Brittany Miller. When she accepted the invitation, he started beating the drum and the bushes looking for Texas women who’d rise to the challenge. It was North vs. South, state vs. state and it worked, but he didn’t stop there.
RIDE TV was on hand to film the first ever TBRA finals and spent time with Miller learning about the sport, her attraction to it and goals. She won their hearts. When McElroy went to the company with a pitch for a TV series, the equine media firm gave him the nod. Nobody knew where that would lead.
Without dropping the ball for the classic, bareback and men’s ranch bronc riding the organization supports, the hard work of attracting rodeo committees to the idea of adding a women’s event and adding the prize money began. Committees agreed to try and were astounded by the increase in support for their rodeos in ticket sales and the enthusiasm for the girls.
The women came from the ranks of Professional Women’s Rodeo Association bull and bareback riders, jumping horses, ranch rodeo and roller derby. They came from Montana, Kentucky, Virginia, Oklahoma and California. Some, like Miller, were seasoned veterans of the event. Others got on their first ranch bronc in front of a crowd after paying entry fees. A few would fall by the wayside, several were injured and out of competition. In typical roughy tradition, a few would ride with cracked bones against doctor’s orders.
The McElroy’s opened their home to the girls so they could afford to stay in Texas and rodeo. What started out as the business of promoting a brand became a family thing: the McElroy’s soon went from promoters to surrogate parents to a band of young, wild cowgirls.
As for the cowgirls, they became twisted sisal sisters. Tightly bonded, sharing knowledge, encouragement and support. They laughed with and at one another, dusted each other off, wiped away blood and the occasional hot tears of disappointment. They celebrated every victory in the way only people who routinely risk their lives together can. They became a tribe.
Brittany Miller went into her first finals with a substantial lead for the year end championship. Duke Wimberly hung on to win the finals while the championship went home with Miller.
Watch for the RIDE TV series ‘Cowgirls’ on Wednesdays at 7 pm central time.
