On May 17, 2015 the 65th annual Miles City Bucking Horse Sale featured the first ever WSRRA ranch bronc riding competition. The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale showcases prospective saddle broncs, bareback broncs and bulls, drawing stock contractors from all over the U.S. and Canada. The MCBHS Board of Governors member, John Morford stated “We hope this is the first year of a long lasting relationship with the WSRRA Ranch Bronc Riding and we expect that this event will get bigger and better every year!”
Twelve invited WSRRA ranch bronc riders travelled to Miles City to ride at the prestigious bucking horse sale. These bronc riders included WSRRA Ranch Bronc directors, representatives, and top contenders in the WSRRA standings. After one round in the long go, the top 4 ranch bronc riders were featured in the short round, of the 8 Seconds Whiskey Tour Stop; with double points and $2500 added money, for a total purse of $5000. Justin Quint from Colorado took 1st place, Mason Ross from Montana was 2nd, David Gordon from Idaho took 3rd and Jd Brock from Idaho was 4th. Richey, Montana stock contractor, Shane Vaira provided the bucking horses for the contest. 1st place winner Justin Quint, went on to be the 2015 WSRRA World Champion Ranch Bronc Rider.
The World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale is famous for the nature of its bucking, bawling broncs and bronc tamers, but even more a gathering place for ranchers, and a destination for thousands of people from across the country and around the world. This historic event is an old fashioned tribute to the western lifestyle held in town of Miles City, MT, rich in the history of the Old West.
Miles City, MT, began as a US military outpost just after the 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn, and by 1917 the bustling cow town had two rail road lines. In the 1930s, a dustbowl broke several area homesteaders, and they released their horses into the wild. When the first bucking horse sale was held in 1951, many of the tens of thousands of roaming wild horses were auctioned. The informal gathering of stock contractors who organized the first sale has evolved into the MCBHS a Board of Governors to operate the event.
The 2016 historic Miles City Bucking Horse Sale will once again feature the WSRRA sanctioned, members only, 8 Seconds Whiskey Tour Stop. This year’s competition will feature 3 go-rounds and $10,000 added money for a total purse of $17,200. 24 bronc riders will make their way to Miles City, Montana May 20, 21 and 22 to compete at the WSRRA 8 Seconds Whiskey Tour Stop, for the second time in what has proven to be a very exciting partnership. 24 of the association’s brightest stars will compete in this WSRRA members only sanctioned ranch bronc riding. This year’s format will be a 3 round progressive ranch bronc riding, with 24 entries in the 1st round on Friday. The first round top 16 ranch bronc riders will advance to the 2nd round on Saturday. The championship round on Sunday will feature the top 8 ranch bronc riders from the second round. The 1st round payout will be $4300 and 40 points, 2nd round payout will be $4300 and 60 points and the championship round will be $8600 and 100 points. This official 8 Seconds Whiskey Tour stop will be a matching point, for a total of 200 points towards the WSRRA year-end standings and the prestige’s title of 2016 MCBHS champion ranch bronc rider.

The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale has decades of history, it was an honor last year to be a part of that history. As Ranch Bronc Riding is gaining momentum on a bigger stage, I am so happy to see the “original” classic event on that stage at the classic MCBHS. I’ll be there!~Miles Binger, 2014 WSRRA Rookie of the Year, WSRRA Ranch Bronc Riding Representative
