Meet the Member – Teisha Coffield
By Lily Weinacht
Teisha Coffield is the 2015 CSHSRA goat tying champion. The 18 year old from Yuma, Colo., competed in the NHSFR for the fourth and final time in July following her third trip to the IFYR in breakaway roping, goat tying, and team roping as the header with her 15-year-old brother, Chadron, who also qualified for the NHSFR as a freshman. “Rodeo is a lot of fun, and the people you meet makes it all worthwhile,” says Teisha. “Those long-lasting relationships come into your life for a reason, and it’s a time for my family to be together. For me, practicing is a lot of fun, and being with my animals and trying to better myself.”
Teisha was inspired to rodeo from an early age by her cousins, who introduced her to the CJRA and NLBRA. She moved on to junior high rodeo, competing at the NJHFR three times, before joining the CSHSRA as a freshman. “I’ve always looked up to my cousins, since they were the initial people who got me involved in rodeo, and as I’ve gotten older, I look up to people like Hayden Segelke Todd in goat tying, and Trevor Brazile for being such a well rounded competitor,” says Teisha. “And my parents (Mark and Irene Coffield) have shown me what kind of person I want to be – those are some of the people who have really influenced me in my journey through grade school and high school, and helped me become who I am. I wouldn’t have had that if I hadn’t been a part of rodeo!”
While she gives every event her all, Teisha’s favorite is goat tying. “It’s an adrenaline rush when you step off, and when I was little, my aunt made a game of it to teach me and my cousins to be competitive and still have fun with it,” Teisha explains. Her good goat tying horse, Smoke, was hurt before the IFYR, but Teisha was able to compete on him at the NHSFR, using her backup horse, Chiquita in the meantime. Belle is her team roping horse, while she uses brother’s calf horse, Dinero, in the breakaway roping. “We also run quite a few other horses, and cow/calf pairs, and we have quite a few dogs and goats, so it’s kind of like a petting zoo!” she says with a laugh.
The Coffields make their home on the far northeastern plains of Colorado near Yuma. Teisha graduated from the local high school, Lone Star School, and was the valedictorian for her class. She is signed on to compete for two years on the Northeastern Junior College rodeo team in Sterling, Colo. “After that, I’m not sure where I’ll go. I want to do pre med and become a pediatrician, so I’m looking for somewhere with a good foundation in medicine and rodeo,” Teisha explains. She spends the bulk of her time rodeoing, but also enjoys working with little kids, gardening, and relaxing at home with her family.
“I’m both sad about leaving high school rodeo, and excited about what’s coming next,” says Teisha. “I’ll really miss high school rodeo. You get to see your rodeo family every weekend, and I’m getting ready to meet a whole new group of people, but it will be different!” Her greatest goal for college is to get her doctorate and pursue college rodeo, with hopes of pro rodeoing after college, though she she’ll have to find the right barrel horse first.
“I want to thank my family for hauling me up and down the road and always making sure I had a horse underneath me. And thanks to my rodeo family and other friends for being supportive and always pushing me to be the best I can be!”
