story by Ruth Nicolaus

Kacie Short is an author.
The Utah Junior High School Rodeo Association member, a pole bender, is writing a science fiction book. A resident of West Haven, Utah, she loves to read and write, with her favorite genre being science fiction. She has enjoyed the series The Program,, and just finished The Crucible.
She rides a twenty year old appaloosa named Happy (nicknamed Happy the Appy), who was her sister’s horse. Kacie just started riding Happy last fall, and she’s been an “awesome” horse. “I love her so much, because every time she goes out to run, she gives it everything you ask her. She’s such an honest, amazing horse.”
Kacie’s favorite barrel racer is Fallon Taylor, because “she’s so out there, she doesn’t care what people think of her. She can be herself.” Kacie loves her crazy outfits, and especially loves Fallon because she also wears a helmet and has since she started riding horses. “It was really cool to see someone like her wear a helmet and not be ashamed of it.” Kacie’s sister, Katie, has a helmet that was autographed by Fallon. Kacie went to the West Valley, Utah ERA rodeo in April and got Fallon’s autograph, and she was thrilled.
When she grows up, she’d like to run barrels professionally. She ran barrels last year but her barrel horse died, and now she has a new one named Flossy, a sorrel, who she has been working with so they are in tune.
Kacie is an eighth grade student at the Ogden Preparatory Academy. She is on the Student Council, the Eagle Team, the Yearbook Team, and is a member of the National Junior High Honor Society.
In addition to her older sister, Katie, she has an older brother, Steven, and another older sister, Kim. She is the daughter of Kevin and Lisa Short.
