Quincy started rodeoing on a little pony, Dally. “We all won our first saddles on this pony,” she said. “But I screamed every time I got to the gate. I think I had major stage fright.” That stage fright is long gone, and Quincy, the youngest sister of the dynamic Segelke clan, has claimed her first Wyoming High School All Around title. “This is my first year in Wyoming, and it’s tough competition.” The 17-year-old from Snyder, Colo., is going to be a senior at Brush High School, a seven mile commute away. She has been rodeoing behind her older sisters, Hayden Segelke Todd (two time CNFR All Around champion) and Paxton (recent barrel racing champion at Belle Fourche). “Growing up, we all liked different events and have filled our own shoes in each event,” she said, “Hayden likes goat tying, Paxton (Pux) likes barrel racing, and I like to rope.” Rodeo is the lifestyle that the Segelke’s have chosen and Quincy wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’ve made lifelong friends between Colorado and Wyoming,” she said. “We left our house on the last day of june and will be back the 19th of July. It’s been like that for the past 9 years.” Growing up, Quincy’s dad, Tim, was always on the road, so being gone is nothing new for her.
“I remember going to Oregon to watch him rodeo when he was trying to make the NFR.” Tim made the NFR twice.
Quincy came to the IFYR from Decataur (Roy Cooper’s Junior World Champion Calf Roping) enroute to Rock Springs. “My sisters came and this is our eighth time coming. It’s the most fun rodeo there is – the atmosphere and the arena – it’s just fun. I’ve met people down here that I’ve kept in touch with.” She is competing in goats breakaway and barrels at the high school finals as well as IFYR. She is currently 17th in the breakaway and 7th in the goat tying. She lost her good barrel mare to colic the day before she left for state finals, and she is running her back up goat tying horse in the barrels at the IFYR. She will share the famous barrel horse, Rascal, with her sister when she goes to Rock Springs in a few weeks.
Vickie is responsible for the horses in the family. “Mom has worked her whole life to keep us mounted,” said Quincy. “She is the one that hauled the family from rodeo to rodeo and took care of all three of us while we competed.” Vickie has trained barrel futurity horses for 20 years. “Whenever our horses need a tune up, Mom gets on them.” Youngest brother, Holden, joined the family when he was six months old. “He is just starting to rodeo, and is pretty handy with a rope.”
She has one more year of school, and another year to compete at the IFYR, after that she is looking to college rodeo somewhere in the South. “I am excited to go somewhere new and be my own person,” she said.
