If you can’t find Kase Busby in the practice pen or on the basketball court, check the kitchen. The twelve year old cowboy, a resident of Hicks, La. and a Louisiana Junior High School Rodeo Association member, loves roping, chute dogging, goat tying and basketball, and he also loves to cook.
Of all his events, the breakaway and goat tying are his favorites, because that’s what he is best at. He rides two horses for his events: Hickory, an eighteen year old and Pete, a fourteen year old, both sorrels. Of the two, Hickory is his preference, because “of how calm he is in the box, and he always gives me a chance to win.”
Kase is a sixth grade student at Hicks High School. He plays basketball and baseball and is president of the school’s 4-H Club, in which he shows horses and used to show goats. The 4-H Club also helps out around the community with demonstration day and judging day, and with food boxes during the holidays for the housebound and less fortunate in Hicks. It feels good providing food for those people, Kase said, and they love to see the 4-Hers come around with the boxes.
Kase spends a lot time with his mom’s parents, James and Ronaleen Hagan, in the kitchen. Kase’s dad Kenneth loves to cook as well, and he’s following in his footsteps. “I give my husband and my mom credit for that,” Jamie Busby said. “My husband is our main cook, and he enjoys it, and Kase sees that.” Kase spends time with his Gran Gran Ronaleen in her kitchen, where “she sets him loose,” Jamie said. “She’ll let him go and he’ll cook.” Kase is good at making spaghetti, tacos, and a special marinade for steak, which is one of his favorite meals.
His baking specialty is cakes, especially a very old family recipe for Red Earth Cake. It’s very similar to red velvet cake but with red icing, and it’s a recipe from Kase’s great-great-grandmother. He makes it from scratch for Thanksgiving and Christmas and everybody loves it.
In his spare time, Kase likes to hang out with friends at basketball games, rodeos, or someone’s house, and watch television, especially Bluebloods, Cops, and Full House reruns.
When he grows up, he’d like to be a professional cowboy and compete in the tie-down, steer wrestling and team roping. One of his rodeo idols is his uncle, Chad Hagan, who is a two-time National Finals Rodeo steer wrestling qualifier. Uncle Chad sometimes comes by the house to give Kase pointers.
This is his first year in junior high rodeo, and his parents are proud of him. “He spends a lot of time in the practice pen,” Jamie said. “He’s been very successful this year.” His older sister Kaylee, who is eighteen, rounds out the household.
