Rodeo is one of the few sports where it’s not uncommon for the second, third, and even forth generations of a family to have competed in the event. So it is with Dixon Winn, RMPRA member as well as a PRCA member. He’s the third generation in his family to be in rodeo and in all likelihood, won’t be the last. “It’s really in my blood. I grew up around rodeo. My grandfather rode bulls, my father rode bulls. I started out riding sheep, and then went to calves, then to steers, small bulls, and finally to big bulls.” Dixon’s competition started out in junior rodeo and from there to high school rodeo. “After high school, I started in pro rodeo and began hitting some of the Rocky Mountain rodeos. I was in the PRCA Wilderness Circuit.”
He’s been the RMPRA for three years and says it has great things to offer its members. “As a bull rider, I know that I will always have good stock to get on. I know the stock contractors and they are just good people. I’ll get to about 15 or 20 Rocky Mountain rodeos a year.”
In learning the art and science of bull riding, Dixon says he was glad to have that family legacy to draw upon. “I was fortunate to have my dad help me get started. Later on, I had Jerry Sheppard, who was an NFR qualifier, help me out a lot.”
Preparation for competition means some planning ahead. “I like to get there early so I have plenty of time to prepare. I make sure all my gear is ready and then I can do some mental preparation. Then it’s just put on my gear and step on.” Dixon says that his mental mindset drives him to success and helps him in the arena. “I have a lot of ‘want to’. I want to be there and I want to win.” Outside the arena, Dixon gets in daily workouts and rides his stationary barrel and bucking barrel every other day or so. “I like to watch videos of guys that ride bulls really well. That helps me in my preparation. I’ll get on practice bulls before a rodeo, and that’s about it.”
Dixon, 22, calls Nephi, Utah home where he lives at home with his parents, Casey and Lindy. He has a sister, Kyleigh, and brother, Shad. “I’m the oldest and they both rodeo too, I’m trying to show the way for them. Shad just turned 16 will be my traveling partner this year and I’m pretty excited about that. He rides bulls and ropes.” Dixon says that his dad has been his biggest influence to him. “He always been a positive influence on me and he has been someone for me to look up to. He always has been there to help me whenever I need it.”
During the week Dixon is working on a ranch. “I just moved to a ranch in Evanston, Wyoming where I’m being a cowboy. It’s chasing cows and riding colts. I do get home about every other weekend to see my family.”
For Dixon rodeo is his leisure time activity, most of the time. “But I like to go on date with a pretty girl once in a while. I like to be with my family and rope with them.” Goals for the future are to continue to rodeo. “I’d like to make it to the NFR a couple of times. And one day get married, have a family, and raise a little bull rider of my own.”
