Meet the Member Cash Hooper
Cash Hooper is a hard worker. The 12-year-old cowboy, a resident of Deming, N.M., loves to tie-down rope “because it requires more work and it’s harder than team roping.” He competes in the New Mexico Junior High School Rodeo Association in the tie-down, goat tying, chute dogging, and as a header for Jake Orris.
The cowboy doesn’t mind doing chores around the ranch and the house, either. He feeds horses and cattle, sprays weeds, and keeps his bed made and picks up the house.
Cash rides four horses. Rooster, a 10-year-old bay, is his tie-down horse. Every Day, another 10-year-old bay, is his heel horse. His goat tying horse is borrowed from his sister and is a twelve-year-old sorrel named Frankie. When he heads, he rides Doc, a twenty-year-old bay gelding. His favorite horse is Every Day, because he is well broke and moves in a smooth way.
He is a seventh grade student at Red Mountain Middle School, where he loves to weld in metals class. He’s made a charcoal grill that will be auctioned off to buy more materials for the class. He’s also made a bridle rack for his parents as a Christmas gift.
The Hooper family has two pet dogs, both long-haired border collies, named Ashley and Dude.
Cash qualified for state finals last year in all of his events. He roped at state finals with Allen Orozco, who was his header. Cash considers himself better at heading but thinks heeling is more fun.
When he grows up, he’d like to pro rodeo or become an electrical engineer, like his grandpa. In pro rodeo, he’d like to be a tie-down and team roper, steer roper, and bulldogger.
Cash is on his school’s honor roll. He has two sisters: Peyton, who is thirteen, and Katlyn, who is ten. He is the son of Wesley and Amy Hooper.
