Austin Maughan, a young and upcoming rodeo athlete, hails from the farming community of Lakeshore, Utah. He is the son of Nate and Natalie Maughan, and has an older sister named Brinley. Austin is an eighth grader at Spanish Fork Junior High where his favorite classes include physical education, math, and animal science. Outside of rodeo, Austin’s hobbies include playing basketball, hunting, and fishing. His father builds houses for a living and Austin would eventually like to combine that passion with his skill for math in a career in architecture.
Austin started team roping with his dad about four years ago, and this is his first season competing in the Utah Junior High School Rodeo Association. His events include team roping with RJ Johnsen and breakaway roping, and he has already qualified for the state finals rodeo. His favorite rodeo last fall was the junior high show in Nephi, and he looks forward to more quality rodeos this spring. Austin heads off of Cash, a big horse with a ton of personality. His breakaway horse, Cruz, doubles as his dad’s heel horse and has a big motor, always ready to run. Austin went through a hard time when he lost two good mounts, but his faith and his family helped him pull through and he is grateful to be well mounted once again.
Rodeo has taught Austin the importance of good sportsmanship and dedicated team work. Attitude is everything in a sport like rodeo, and it helps to stay positive. Austin’s dad always tells him, “choices have consequences, good or bad”, and he tries hard to make good choices everywhere he goes. His hero is his father who has always been willing to help him work on his goals and shares many of the same passions. Austin’s friends and family recognize and appreciate that he can be a bit of a perfectionist, and his desire to make things right helps him know how to find improvement in and out the arena. If he could give advice to rodeo rookies, he would tell them to ride good horses and recognize that this sport is a series of deposits and withdrawals, you only get out what you put in.
Austin would like to thank Matt Bigler, Brady Pitchford, and Cody Bradford for their support and help in the practice pen. He would like to thank his dad for his willingness to spend time with him as he works to improve, and his mom and sister for their constant support. He is grateful for the opportunity to compete in the sport he loves and for the people that make it possible.
