Meet the Member Sheyenne Hammond
story by Ruth Nicolaus
Everybody in chemistry class wants to sit by Sheyenne Hammond. That’s because the Valentine, Nebraska cowgirl is a “brain” and is usually willing to help out her classmates when they don’t understand the subject. Chemistry is one of her favorite classes, and it shows: she has a grade of 96 percent.
In addition to chemistry, she is taking accounting (another favorite class), college English, personal finance, band (she plays the drums), and has a 3.7 GPA.
She is a member of the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association, where she competes in the poles, barrels, breakaway and team roping, heading for Jackson Davis.
Of her events, Sheyenne loves the barrel racing the most, in part because she rides her mom’s WPRA barrel horse, an eighteen year old palomino named Frenchie. Sheyenne’s favorite horse is Ike, her head horse. Ike, a bay, was the first horse she started on, and the one she used for all her events in junior high. He’s calm, nothing bothers him, and he’s the horse that the Hammonds put little kids on when they come to the ranch.
A senior at Valentine High School, Sheyenne plays basketball but was out nearly all of the season, due to a broken ankle. She started on the volleyball team, is a member of FFA, the National Honor Society, the flag corps, and student council.
For fun, Sheyenne often cruises the streets of Valentine (there aren’t many to cruise), or spends time with friends. They love to watch movies at someone’s house. Sheyenne’s favorite movie is Forrest Gump. Her favorite food is tacos; the best school lunch is the first Friday of every month, when the school serves Pizza Hut pizza. Her favorite snack is strawberry Pop Tarts, and her favorite soda pop is Pepsi. She’s a night owl; she’d rather stay up till midnight or later, and then wake up at 9 or 10 am, lay in bed and watch TV or be on her phone.
This fall, she plans on attending college and competing collegiately.
Sheyenne has competed at the Nebraska High School Finals the last three years. She qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo in 2017 in the barrel racing.
She has a younger brother, Hayes, who is an eighth grader and a junior high school rodeo contestant. She is the daughter of Justin and Kathy Hammond.
