Meet the Member Marynn Moody
story by Riata Christiansen
Hailing from Delta, Utah, Marynn Moody has small town values of hard work and persistence instilled in her character. She is extremely goal oriented, and works hard to achieve those goals. The eighth grader attends Delta Middle School, and her favorite subject is math. Alongside competing in the Utah Junior High School Rodeo Association, she plays on the school basketball team and is competitive in the National Little Britches Rodeo Association.
Marynn is 14 years old and the youngest of three girls. The oldest is Teasha, who is 24, and the middle girl is Josie, who is 21. Marynn looks up to both for their accomplishments in rodeo and for their excellent work ethic. She admires that they put in the effort and time it takes to be successful in the sport of rodeo. Her mom and dad, Shannon and Brad, got the family on the road to rodeo early. Her dad trains horses, and Marynn has been riding her whole life. She estimates that she competed in her first rodeo when she was only three years old.
Now, her events include barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and the ribbon roping. Her favorite is pole bending, where she has been able to excel and stay consistent. She even qualified for nationals last season. Marynn competes on two gray horses, Nelly and Gunner. Nelly is a proficient pole horse, barrel horse and even carried Marynn in the goat tying at nationals last year. Nelly wasn’t alone at nationals, though, because Gunner helped Marynn qualify in the pole bending. Both horses are special to the family who raised them since two years of age.
A standard rodeo practice for Marynn starts with drilling the barrels and poles then tying down some goats. It usually lasts about two hours and happens at least four times a week, if not more. Those hours spent working through kinks and bobbles leave an impact on the athlete. When she struggles at a rodeo, she remembers the words often spoke by a parent or sister, “Slow and smooth beats fast and wrong”.
The only thing Marynn cannot live without is her dog, Kya. Kya is a playful, sweet German Shepard who has completely stolen Marynn’s heart. Another favorite of Marynn’s is the Utah Junior High School State Finals. It is the culmination of hours of hard work when everything you’ve been working for is just moments away. The large amount of focus and fun makes this rodeo extra special. Besides the actual competing, her favorite part of rodeo is making new friends and seeing those friendships grow.
This year, Marynn is working towards making the National Junior High School Finals rodeo in all her events. She aspires to become a dental hygienist, run in the Pendleton, Oregon arena, and qualify for the NFR in barrel racing. If she could say something to those thinking about competing in rodeo she would say, “Never give up. Always keep working for what you want because eventually, it will all pay off.”
