After finishing second in the bull riding at the NSRA finals three consecutive years from 2012 – 2014, Clint Connelly’s day in the sun finally arrived. The 23 year old from Arnold, Nebraska, took home the 2016 NSRA bull riding title in September after what he described as an intense finals. “It can get pretty heartbreaking to come so close to winning all the time, so going into the finals was pretty intense,” Clint explains. “Being consistent at the finals and riding my bulls was really relieving – and exciting!”
He’s been competing in the NSRA since his freshman year of high school, but he started riding steers when he was ten. “My brothers conned me into it,” Clint jokes. “They were riding roughstock and kept prodding me to go, though I didn’t really have an interest in it. But I entered a junior rodeo with my brother Callan and loved it since.” The youngest of three boys, Clint finds much of his inspiration from his brothers, Callan and Chad, and their dad, Vince Connelly. “There have been quite a few people who helped me out, but my brothers have really pushed me, and Dad would critique my rides growing up. When I turned 18, I joined the PBR and Kenny Barringer let me get on his practice bulls, which helped my riding a bunch.”
Clint high school rodeoed for Nebraska two years and qualified both times for the NHSFR. He and Callan travelled to many NSRA and PRCA rodeos for several seasons, and these days, Clint is joined in his Jeep by his wife, Debbie, and their four-year-old daughter, Kenzie. “They travel with me about 90% of the time – they’ve been there for me a lot. Debbie manages the books and finds the best places to enter, and Kenzie loves horses and going to bull ridings and rodeos so she can watch the horses.” Clint took a year off from the NSRA in 2015 to compete in bull ridings like the Double S Bull Company LLC – Extreme Bull Riding Tour. He rode a bull at the PBR BluDef Velocity event in Omaha, Nebraska, setting his professional high score with an 89. “It was also cool because Callan pulled the gate for me there,” says Clint. “My brother Chad is a bullfighter, and he fights a lot of NSRA rodeos. He worked their finals in 2015.”
Though Clint grew up working on ranches with his dad, he’s never had an interest in roping. “I think the adrenaline rush of riding bulls is awesome, plus I’ve always thought those broncs are pretty scary. Bulls aren’t too scary unless they’re chasing me,” he says with a laugh. The times they have chased him ended with a broken jaw on two separate occasions, and several broken ribs. “The first time I broke my jaw, it was at an ABBI competition in Las Vegas and I wound up with a plate in my mouth and my jaw wired shut. I drank a lot of breakfast shakes during that time. The second time was at Stapleton’s NSRA rodeo, but I was able to just let it heal.”
Clint rodeoed full time through the summer, and he’s using the winter months to do day work for ranches and ride colts. “I’ll still have some events to go to this winter, and I’ll keep doing the PBR and NSRA, and M-SRA, where I won reserve at the finals this fall. My goal is to keep working on the basics of bull riding, and increasing my consistency.”
