The Stan Harter Memorial $1000 scholarship was awarded during the June College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) to Josie Goodrich from Stanfield, Oregon. She is majoring in Criminal Justice and Multimedia Journalism at Washington State University (WSU). Because of academics she choose WSU, which does not have a rodeo team. Josie leaves school to rodeo every weekend and is a reporter and copy editor for the WSU student-run newspaper, The Daily Evergreen. She funds her own entry fees, travel expenses, and everything involved with college rodeo While maintaining a 4.0 GPA she has made it to the CNFR in barrel racing the last two years. Stan Harter competed for Arizona State University and was the 1966 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Champion Calf Roper and Ribbon Roper. He was a steady winner in calf roping in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City from 1970-73. Stan was president of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Alumni (NIRAA) and a long-time supporter of college rodeo. He was a good friend of Del Nose, Coach for the Northwest College Rodeo Team, Powell, Wyoming and Mary Fuller, 1968 NIRA Goat Tying Champion, Catawissa, Missouri who donated the $1,000 scholarship.
Madison Deck, was awarded a $500 runner up Stan Harter Memorial Scholarship funded by an anonymous donor. Don Reichert, NIRAA President, presented it to J .D. Van Hooser, Murray State Rodeo Coach.
Tyree Cochran, past rodeo team officer, Miss Cal Poly Rodeo Queen, West Coast Region Student Director, and NIRA president was re-elected at the NIRA Board Meeting during the CNFR and received the President Scholarship. She is a San Luis Obispo native and Animal Science graduate student working on her masters degree in Animal Research at California Polytechnic State University. After college, Cochrane hopes to continue being involved with pro rodeos. Harlan Schott, 1971 NIRA President, believes it is important to support the NIRA President elected at the meeting in Casper by donating the $500 NIRA Student President Scholarship.
